It's Barbeque Season!

Here comes summer again, and with it the need to get outdoors and go Al-Fresco! Barbies are a great way to entertain, and are as popular as in Australia; with alternative cooking media to boot.

The Traditional Charcoal - Best used at large parties, where lots of cooking is required and alternative entertainment can be employed while the food cooks. These provide a good smoky taste to anything you cook on them - but can be troublesome in the hands of the inexperienced host, particularly when lighting.

Gas Grills - Idealic for smaller parties, and a breeze to start! As there's no charcoal, there's no mess, so this makes gas perfect for anyone who has lots to do, and no time. The downside to a gas grill is the weight of the cylinder, the neccessity to check for leaks carefully, and the missing Smokey taste!

Electric Grills - Got a small family and an R.C.D. ? Then what are you waiting for? These grills are by far the easiest to set-up, but watch out for rain!

If the weather turns inclement, no worries! Just set it up in the kitchen, and carry on! The downside to the electric grill is the cost of running one, but is clearly offset by it's flexibility.

Disposable Barbeques - Not a bad idea if you're intent on barbies on location, but as these are charcoal based, care in disposal must be taken. Make sure that it has gone out completely, and avoid placing the used barbie in waste bins that may contain paper. (Please note that various locations do not encourage the use of these items, so check first before you cook!).

However you intend on barbequeing, let safety be your watchword! Go easy with the lighting fluid - this is the largest cause of injury with barbies, and spoils everyone's day! As stated above, check your equipment carefully - a few moments can prevent a disaster! Be watchful of the children - hot doesn't always look hot, until it's too late!

A useful tip for barbies - A microwave is a useful asset when it comes to cooking chicken, steaks and sausages. Pre-cooking helps to produce meat that is nicely browned without the case-hardening of carbon. Give your barbeque the edge this way, and reduce the cooking time dramatically, too.

Most of all, enjoy yourselves. It's a good way to get to know your neighbours, and harvest a good community feeling.

Enjoy!
